Angel 101

By invitation only, this 4-hour introductory session (1-5pm) enables new or prospective investors to understand how to think about angel investing as an asset class. All elements of the investment process will be reviewed by experienced investors using some of their own experiences to spice up the session. Reception and Hors d’oeuvres will follow from 5-6pm.

About the Presenters

Larry Innanen

Larry is an angel investor in a number of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies in Waterloo and surrounding regions. He is the founder and president of Innplay ® through which he provides strategic advice and consulting services to these and other companies. Larry is a graduate of The University of Western Ontario Law School and a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada. He is an Advanced Management Program (AMP 156) graduate from the Harvard Business School and enjoyed a 23 year career with Labatt Brewing Company and Interbrew North America where he served among other roles as its EVP General Counsel and VP of Strategic Planning Services.

Larry resides in Oakville and is a charter member of the Golden Triangle Angelnet (GTAN) in the Waterloo Region where he sits on the Selection Committee. Larry is a founding member of Angel One Investor Network and the Chairman of its Board of Directors and its Screening Committee.

His current angel investment portfolio includes 32 companies.

Frank Erschen

Frank is an active angel investor, mentor and entrepreneur. After graduating from Wilfrid Laurier University’s business program it took him only 25 years in the corporate world (IBM, BMO) before entrenching himself in the start-up ecosystem. His corporate foundation prepared him for roles such as CEO/CIO of a start-up which raised $35 million and currently as chief strategist & board chair for Powernoodle, where is also lead investor, and Global Music Depot, where he has a founding role. In addition to his portfolio roles, Frank also provides services to Communitech as a mentor in the Hyperdrive program and a pitch-coach for all programs.

He is a charter member and 2011 Angel of the Year of the Golden Triangle Angelnet and serves on the Selection Committee. He was recently appointed to the board of NAO-Ontario, is past-chair of the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society, and was a Laurier board member from 2005-2011. He is a resident of highways 407 and 401.

His portfolio includes over a dozen companies and annually contributes time to dozens more.

Sanjay Singhal

Sanjay is a salesman, serial entrepreneur, and angel investor. He was salesperson of the year at Scientific Atlanta (now Cisco) after booking over $100 million in sales in a single year. He has founded or co-founded six companies, and is currently a principal investor in 4 start-ups. 
 
After two disastrous initial forays into entrepreneurship resulting in personal bankruptcy, he has since hit his stride as the CEO and co-founder of Fusenet Inc., a $20 million/yr software development firm in Oakville, Ontario. Fusenet operates the world’s largest rental site for audio books and an internet video search tool with over 5 million users. The company has also invested in initiatives in file transfer technology; a new type of search engine; and mobile applications for the iPhone. 
 
Sanjay has been published in WIRED magazine, and is a distinguished public speaker, having won numerous awards for humorous and motivational speaking. He speaks frequently to students on the subjects of entrepreneurship and networking, and contributes actively to innovation in Ontario by serving on the advisory board of Haltech, the newest member organization of the Ontario Network of Excellence. 
 
Sanjay has Bachelors and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from UNB and UBC respectively, and an MBA from Cornell University. He is married and resides in Mississauga.

Karen Grant

Karen Grant is an entrepreneur, investor, corporate director, consultant, and mentor. After 12 years in sales and marketing at IBM Canada, she was recruited 
to lead the Toronto Venture Group where over 10 years she helped hundreds of companies that were seeking capital. She created and launched the Toronto Angel Group in 2001.

In 2005 she was instrumental in the formation of the Northern Enterprise Gateway, now called Northern Ontario Angels, was a founding director and became Chair in 2008.  
NOA members have invested over $12 million in 30 companies over the past 3 years.

Karen is presently Angel One Investor Network’s executive director and it is the third angel group she has launched.  Incorporated in September 2011, it is a member-based 
not-for-profit organization for accredited investors who live, work or have strong interests in Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and surrounding areas.

As of August 2012, with 75 members, Angel One has closed 11 investments for an aggregate amount of over $3.5 million.

Her current angel investment portfolio is significantly smaller than everyone else’s.
