Growing Your Business Seminars

The entrepreneur seminars and workshops offered by RIC Centre include the Growing Your Business bi-monthly breakfast-with-the-experts seminars: an excellent way to network and gain valuable information from aspiring businesses, enterprise companies, service providers and government organizations. During these entrepreneur seminars, three guest speakers (an academic, an industry specialist and an entrepreneur) present their expert advice, followed by a panel discussion. The session ends with a lively networking period. All previous event presentations are displayed on our website.

Growing your Business through Entrepreneur Seminars and Workshops


Entrepreneur Workshops

Facilitated by experienced entrepreneurs and provided to RIC Centre members free of charge, Entrepreneur Workshops are a collection of hands-on group sessions offering start-ups the tools, mentoring, and peer feedback to solve specific problems and build essential business components. Each four hour workshop generates a deliverable, which can be used in future business development endeavours. The six workshops below are offered on a monthly basis to our clients:

Starting Lean: Value Proposition - 3 workshops, 4 hours each – Next Workshop: June 30, July 7 & 14, 2016
Do you have an idea or a product that you would like to turn into a business? This two-part workshop series is designed to help early-stage ventures understand the Lean Startup approach and learn ways to start collecting feedback from potential customers.

Day 1 – Preparing to Leave the Building: June 30 : 9:00 am-1:00 pm

Establish a process to clarify and test key assumptions you have about your business and lower your ventures overall risk.

Deliverable – Overview of the Lean Startup approach and a tested interview guide based on the venture’s most important foundational assumptions.

Day 2 – Refinding Your Cusomter Development: July 7: 9:00 am-1:00 pm

In this second of 3 parts, each participant focuses on improving what is typically the hardest step for entrepreneurs, leaving behind their idea/invention solution and learning instead about the customer situation without pitching their solution. Using the techniques learned in Session 1, this second step helps hone abilities in three dimensions through open peer appraisal of the discovery interview process, clear identification of the critical business assumptions and validation and interpretation of customer learning.

 Deliverable: Solid customer interviewing technique that can be used continually through the course of a new business development.

Day 3 – Determining Your Value Proposition: July 14: 9:00 am-1:00 pm

Use data obtained from customer interviews to synthesize customer feedback into a value proposition.

Deliverable: A framework and template for determining your value proposition

Starting Lean: Business Model - 2 workshops, 4 hours each

“The purpose of a startup is to search for a scalable and repeatable business model,” says Steve Blank. At its most basic level, your business model illustrates how your new venture will make money.

In this two-part workshop series, we follow Steve Blank’s methodology and introduce startups to Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas and the analytical process required to validate their business model. The workshops are highly interactive and all participants will be able to design their own business model during the series.

 

Day 1 – Designing Your Business Model

This session will introduce participants to Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas and the key questions to consider when designing a business model. This is a very hands-on session; all participants are expected to work on several business model designs, including their own business model, before the session is over.

Day 2 – Validating your business model

In this session, you will learn how to analyze external forces, such as macro, industry, and competitive threats and opportunities, and how to implement findings in your business model design. The session will also cover key business model analytics, including customer acquisition cost and customer lifetime value, and their importance in finding and validating a sustainable business model.

Finance Fundamentals - 3 workshops, 4 hours each
Do you understand the financial metrics of your business? Do you want to be able to speak knowledgeably to your accountant, bank or investors about your company finances, or to manage a plan to ensure that you have the necessary cash available when your business needs it? This three-part workshop series is designed to help entrepreneurs understand basic financial concepts, build a forecasting model to use in running their businesses and identify key concepts of valuation that apply to their businesses.

 

Day 1 – Preparing Your Business Forecast

As an entrepreneur, understanding the financial performance, forecast and value of your business is a critical component to making sound strategic business decisions, building strong relationships with potential suppliers, banks and investors, and relieving stress by planning for and managing peaks and valleys in cash flow. In this session, we help you understand the basics of financial statements and begin to build a detailed cash-flow forecast to be used in making day-to-day business decisions around growth.

Day 2 – Understanding Revenue Forecasting and Funding
In the second session, we will demonstrate how to add revenue estimates to your cash-flow forecast, taking you through inputs such as pricing, sales funnel and revenue types. The result will be a complete cash-flow forecasting model you can use in your business. You will use your forecast model to determine how much funding you will need to grow your business.

Day 3 – Business valuation and tutorial session

The beginning portion of the session will outline basic concepts surrounding different types of business valuations and the inputs and factors that impact valuation from an investor perspective. You will use the forecast model to populate the valuation calculations for your own business, to begin to demonstrate the valuation methodology in action. The second half of the session is a working session, which will allow you to further work on your cash flow model, obtain assistance working through any aspects of the topics raised in the workshop and begin researching topics to help in your valuation assessment.

Deliverables: Basic, complete 12-month cash-flow forecast for your business

The MarCom Toolkit - 3 workshops, 4 hours each

This workshop series examines the principles of marketing communication strategy and how start-ups can use them to increase opportunities for growth.

Day 1 – Identify and Define Your Target Audience

This session introduces the “MarCom Strategic Framework,” and focuses on two key elements: defining your target audience and establishing credibility.

Deliverable:
A strategy to build a target audience, as well as identify and engage with key opinion leaders (KOLs) to build domain leadership and credibility

Pre-Reading Materials:

Day 2 – Evaluating Channels

In this session, you will align your marketing objectives with the consumers’ buying process while examining a variety of marketing channels and activities. You will evaluate and select which ones are the most relevant and credible with your target audience.

Deliverable:
A strategy to evaluate and select relevant marketing activities and media channels to complement your customers’ buying process, and develop a brand positioning statement

Day 3 – Communicating to Customers

In the final MarCom session, the focus will be on developing your message. You will explore communications techniques, identify language that resonates with your target market, and adapt the message across the selected media that efficiently and effectively reach your target market.

A series of clearly structured messages, a media selection template and key components of a media kit

The B2B Sales Process - 3 workshops, 4 hours each

This workshop series gives entrepreneurs techniques to map out their sales process as well as tools to manage and influence sales opportunities.

 

Day 1 – The Sales Funnel

Define the stages of the sales cycle for your customers and map out your sales pipeline.

Deliverable: A spreadsheet with sales-funnel data for a prospective customer.

Practice managing individual sales opportunities in order to turn leads into prospects.

Pitching to Investors - 2 workshops, 4 hours each
Many new ventures need to access external sources of funding to effectively build their product and enter the market. This workshop series will help you to understand how to create a powerful pitch that you can use to engage investors.

 

Day 1 – What do Investors Want to Know

In this session, participants will focus on gathering and structuring the information required to effectively engage with investors. Using the essentials of effective communication, you will craft a compelling narrative that will help your venture to stand out in front of investors.

Deliverable: A summary of the 10 key components that form your investment story

Day 2 – Creating Your Pitch 

This session will focus on creating a powerful narrative and pitch by applying the principles of storytelling. You will be given the opportunity to practice your pitch during the session and obtain feedback that will help you to turn your investment story into a compelling presentation.

Deliverable: A 10-slide pitch deck summarizing your key information

Expert Speaker Series

RIC Centre’s Expert Speaker Series are a bi-weekly seminar series that provides educational training and networking on various business-related topics. These series are open to the public and startup entrepreneurs in the community. The topics are selected by each incubator cohort of companies every six months and are customized to ensure accelerated growth. Each session includes lunch, a speaker presentation, Q&A and networking time. These events are free for tenants and graduates of the RIC Centre Incubator program, and have a $10 fee for other RIC Centre clients.

The RIC Centre’s Peer-2-Peer Networking sessions for entrepreneurs are private invitation-only events organized for members of the RIC Emerging CEO’s Network.
