Practical and relevant to the day to day operations of a manufacturing facility, Innovate>Forward continues to give advanced manufacturing companies the kind of “walk away and apply today” tips, tools and advice they need in order to successful pilot a new idea through to commercialization.
At the April 17th session, 30 guests and at least one robot were taken through the stages of moving a new idea through prototyping, with case study examples for how robots are routinely prototyped at ABB, one of the world’s leading robotic companies.
“The processes of taking an idea to the prototype stage and customer evaluation were very well-explained…”, noted James Kendall, President of Kendall Technology. Kendall added, “It’s the kind of information you can relate to right away, and apply as soon as you return to work that very day.”
At one point during the session, attendees were introduced to a life-like robot named Frida. With its robotics branch right here in Ontario, the ABB Group has installed over 190,000 robots worldwide to enable efficiency and greater productivity across a wide range of industries and sectors.
Tools presented at the Piloting Innovation session included a Lean Checklist Self Assessment demonstrated by entrepreneur-in-residence, Tim Scott, and a Resources and Criteria tool presented by Andrew Maxwell. Dr. Maxwell is the Chief Innovation Officer at the Canadian Innovation Centre and has also been an industry advisor to CBC’s Dragon’s Den. Both Scott and Maxwell are regular presenters at the Innovate>Forward sessions. The event was held right at the ABB plant where participants could see numerous robots, functioning in various capacities and hear from experts working at the plant explain the application or testing in process.
Look out for Session Six, of Innovate Forward, Channel Development, to be held Tuesday, May 15, 7.30 AM to 10.00 AM.
