How to Build a Team for Your Startup

March 10, 2021 RICCentre

When it comes to building a team for your startup, you want to ensure you are being strategic. You started this business and you know the ins and outs of what it is, how it works and what the vision is. Sharing that with someone else and ensuring they are on the same page can be a daunting task. You take pride in sharing that you are a solopreneur but solopreneurship can only get you so far.

Every great business has to build a team at some point in order to establish grounds for sustainable growth.

In a list of the top 20 reasons why most startups fail, not having the right team is number three on that list. In order to avoid this, you need to ensure you are being strategic and thoughtful when it comes to growing your team.

1. Think about areas in your business where you lack expertise

Take a look at yourself and the things you do really well. Then look at all of the things you currently do because you have to but know someone else would be better at. These are gaps you need to fill in order to ensure you are using your time and energy to do things that you’re good at instead of things that could be done better by someone else.

2. Hire for those gaps

Now you want to fill those gaps with people who are dedicated and hungry to help you build out your business. You want to ensure that the people you put into these roles are competent and able to do the tasks you need them to do. If they are not, you might find yourself spending more time trying to teach and train them instead of focusing on the tasks you need to get to. You are not hiring someone to teach them how to do the job.

3. Find the right personalities but keep it diverse

Sometimes hiring your friend who seems passionate about your business and you already hang out with them feels like the right idea but it ends up backfiring in the long run. You want to find people that share similar personalities with you but also look for diversity in interests, cultures and backgrounds to keep the creativity flowing. You never know what great ideas may come from someone you met and hired in the last month. “A diverse team with different skill sets was often cited as being critical to the success of a company.”

4. Stay true to the “hire slow, fire fast” mentality

Take you time trying to find the right talent to join your team. This decision is a big one. If you do find you’ve hired the wrong person, fire fast. Make the decision to let them go on good terms and find someone to fill their place.

There is a lot to think about when you are hiring more people to support you with your business venture. You want to keep the process fun while also making smart business decisions. Work slow, find the right people to fill the gaps and keep the creativity flowing to help your startup soar.
