Tips for Mobile App Development at Your Software Startup

Mobile apps are a huge part aspect of running a modern software startup, with most consumers finding phones to be the most convenient way to interact with businesses. However, mobile app development is an incredibly costly process; ranging anywhere from $10,000 to $250,000. With that in mind, tech entrepreneurs are always looking for the most cost-effective ways to have their product built. The key decisions that could lead to big savings for your company often occur much before development even begins. Below are two articles that outline some key topics to keep in mind when thinking about how you’ll have your app developed.

Which Operating System Is Best for Your Startup’s Mobile App?

Apple and Android are the two operating systems (OS) dominating today’s mobile software market. While Apple iOS is only used on iPhones, the Google’s Android OS is used in essentially every other smartphone available on the market right now. Developing a unique app in each native language can be incredibly costly for a startup, seeing as the management of separate teams would likely be necessary. As such, startups looking to take advantage of native app capabilities may need to choose which group of mobile users they wish to target initially. This article compares the benefits of developing an app for each OS. When startups can’t afford to narrow down their targeted users like that, developing a hybrid app is also an option; their merits are also discussed.

Should Your Software Startup Join the Move to Progressive Web Apps?

As already stated, mobile app development is even more costly and difficult to manage when you need to make a unique native app for each OS. When companies need to do that in addition to building and maintaining a website, the costs can just get unreasonable. Progressive Web Apps (PWA) are a cost-effective solution to this issue. Developing a PWA allows startups to focus on developing one dynamic application that works on any mobile, tablet, or desktop device. In this article, we sat down with James Lee, the VP of Engineering at Expancio, to get insight into the origin of PWAs and how they can be a cost-effective solution for startup businesses. We also put the spotlight on Expancio, a cost-effective platform that allows people with little programming knowledge to build their own PWA.
