Creating software products for the life science industry is a specialized area of software development. These software products are created to streamline and alleviate pain points that are experienced by both technical users and patients within the life science field. As a result, startups may struggle to develop software products for this industry due to the complexity of the problem trying to be solved, the regulations in place, as well as trying to design a product that is user friendly (human factors engineering).

The following are the overviews of two articles that cover some of the key techniques and considerations that all entrepreneurs should review when planning and developing a software product for the life science industry.

Understanding and Navigating Life Science Software Regulations

Software products created for the life science industry can range from health applications for remote patient monitoring, streamlining hospital administration, all the way up to the storage and analysis of clinical trial patient data. Due to the complex nature of the industry, there are a number of regulations in place to ensure that the security and protection of any user information is maintained.

This article focuses on some of the new market trends that are influencing the need for stricter regulations within this industry. Additionally, methods startups can ensure that security is a top priority in the development of their software product are discussed, as well as specific regulations around hosting a life science software product on the cloud. This article will also cover what startups can do in-house during software development to adhere to these regulations prior to hiring a consultant.

Software Design for the Life Science Industry

Designing a successful software product for any industry or user group is a difficult task that involves user research and multiple iterations of prototyping. When a startup is trying to design a software product for the life science industry the process is complicated even further. This is because many startups tend to focus just on creating a software product that can solve a complex problem, rather than creating a product that is also easy to use.

This article focuses on the importance of User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design elements, as well as how to design a software product with human factors engineering in mind. Additionally, this article will review emerging trends in the field of life science and how to design a software product to address these new technologies. This article also goes through some of the key design principles that should be followed by startups to ensure that a stellar software product is created for the life science industry.
